Tsuka Kohei, Japan’s Renowned Playwright, Battles Cancer

Renowned Japanese Playwright Kohei Tsuka (61) announced, via fax, last Monday to the media that he has been diagnosed with lung cancer. He is currently undergoing medical treatment at a hospital.

Rehearsals have already started for his “Hiryuden 2010,” the latest production of the “Hiryuden” story. The play will still open as scheduled on February 3rd at the Shinbashi Enbujo. Tsuka has remained active from his sick bed, having his team record practices for him, viewing it in the hospital and providing feedback. In his press release to the media, Tsuka stated rehearsals have become perfect, and he encouraged audiences to enjoy the play.

Japanese pop star Iconiq aka Ito Ayumi aka Ahyoomee Lee is the new face of Shiseido Maquillage. The move suprises many who expected Shiseido to go with household celebrity name. Shiseido’s Maquillage line targets Asian women age 25-35.

Actress Kuroki Meisa Global Face of L’Oreal Paris

Twenty one year old Japanese Actress Kuroki Meisa has just signed a deal with French cosmetic giant L’Oreal Paris as the Global Face of L’Oreal. The actress follows in the steps of Hollywod’s Beyonce Knowles and Penelope Cruz. She will be the second Japanese woman to sign such lucrative deal with L’Oreal since Japan’s Kawahara Ayako

“I hope to become someone who can support Japanese women and be on par with the other women of the world. I’d like to show the world the beauty of Japanese women.”

Singer Asakawa Maki Dead at 67

Popular Japanese Singer Asakawa Maki known for her vocal style which mirrored Billie Holliday and Mahalia Jackson’s was pronounced dead on Sunday from acute heart failure. The singer was found dead in her hotel room at Nagoya hotel, in Tokyo. She was 67. May her soul RIP.

Anna Tsuchiya, the daughter of a Japanese father and Russian mother is an actress, model and musician who excels at all three roles. Anna began working as a model at age fourteen working for clients like Seveenteen Magazine. While modeling brought and controversy over her “weight,” it was really work as an actress in the 2004 fiim, “Kamikaze Girls” (2004) that really brought fame–eight film awards, including the Japanese Academy Award. Japanese actress Saki Takaoka began her career as a singer but she didn’t exactly “Wow” her audience. Still dabbling in the creative world, Takaoka turned to modeling, modeling for a nude photobooks. Did that get her attention? You betcha! Takaoka later found her “voice” in acting. Her segue into acting has impressed many and she has starred in many Japanese movies including Nezu no ban (寝ずの番, 2006), Kanashiki Tenshi (悲しき天使, 2006), A Long Walk (長い散歩, 2006), Like a Dragon (龍が如く劇場版, 2007), Waiting for Good News (Kafu wo Machiwabite 2009), Echo of Silence (Kotoba no Nai Fuyu 2008), Samurai Gangsters (Jirocho sangokushi 2008), Memo (2008) and Last Words (Koi suru nichiyobi watashi, Koishita 2007).

Takaoka prepares to make her USA debut in the U.S.-Japan produced film “The Harima Bridge,” thanks to the interest taken by Hollywood Actor Danny Glover in her work. “The Harima Bridge” is directed by Aaron Woolfolk and produced by Danny Glover and will be in theaters in the USA this year, 2009.
