The Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) is Australia’s highly respected three week festival that features over 400 films from more than 50 countries with over 182,000 attendees. MIFF just completed its 48th Annual Film Festival with the world premiere of Aboriginal musical, “Bran Nue Dae.”

Australia’s bright stars like singer Missy Higgins, Jessica Mauboy and Dan Sultan were among the many stars around the world in attendance.

Saki Takaoka

Japanese actress Saki Takaoka began her career as a singer but she didn’t exactly “Wow” her audience. Still dabbling in the creative world, Takaoka turned to modeling, modeling for a nude photobooks. Did that get her attention? You betcha! Takaoka later found her “voice” in acting. Her segue into acting has impressed many and she has starred in many Japanese movies including Nezu no ban (寝ずの番, 2006), Kanashiki Tenshi (悲しき天使, 2006), A Long Walk (長い散歩, 2006), Like a Dragon (龍が如く劇場版, 2007), Waiting for Good News (Kafu wo Machiwabite 2009), Echo of Silence (Kotoba no Nai Fuyu 2008), Samurai Gangsters (Jirocho sangokushi 2008), Memo (2008) and Last Words (Koi suru nichiyobi watashi, Koishita 2007).

Takaoka prepares to make her USA debut in the U.S.-Japan produced film “The Harima Bridge,” thanks to the interest taken by Hollywood Actor Danny Glover in her work. “The Harima Bridge” is directed by Aaron Woolfolk and produced by Danny Glover and will be in theaters in the USA this year, 2009.

China’s “Elizabeth Taylor” Joan Chen might appear familiar to you. That is because the award winning actress was the “highly sexed, opium-addicted empress” in Bernardo Bertolucci’s, The Last Emperor.

Joan Chen studied acting at the Shangai Film Studio in 1975 and by 1977 she made her debut on China’s big screens. Her rise to populatity in China came when she played a deaf mute girl cured by acupuncture in the movie “Little Flower.” Since then, she has starred in numerous roles and won many awards within and outside China including: Golden Horse Awards, Asian Film Awards, AFI Award, Film Critics Circle of Australia Awards, Hong Kong Film Critics Society Award and the Hundred Flowers Awards.

Joan Chen is a graduate of Cal State Northridge with a degree in Film production. She lives in San Francisco with her family.

Deepika Padukone, Bollywood’s Hottest Newcomer

Twenty three year old Danish born Indian actress and model Deepika Padukone is one of the fresh new faces in Bollywood. She is quickly, nevertheless, making a name for herself with her talent and gorgeous looks.

Deepika’s big break in Bollywood came when she starred in Farah Khan’s hit movie “Om Shanti Om.” The film which dealt with reincarnation and love featured Bollywood’s A-list actor Shahrukh Khan as lead actor with Deepika playing lead actress. The film which grossed over 17-million in India and over 4-million overseas has firmly placed Deepika in the top list of film actresses in Bollywood, worldwide.
